Charles Gates was a graduate of the Harvard Law School. In 1937, he was named as a cadet lieutenant in Company A of the battalion at the Culver Military Academy in special orders issued at the conclusion of the graduation exercise held June 9 of that year. He was formerly a supply sergeant and eventually served as a captain in the Infantry, U. S. Army.
Gates later served in various capacities at Charleston National Bank, with his first employment in January 1962. Gates was president for a number of years before becoming chairman. He resigned that position in 1984, but returned in January 1986 as chairman of the board.
Gates has served on numerous professional societies, including American Bankers Association, West Virginia Bankers Association, West Virginia Bar Association, past president of the Charleston Rotary Club, past chairman of the Charleston Regional Chamber of Commerce, and past director and trustee of several voluntary health agencies and hospitals. In addition, Gates was director of Key Centurion Bankshares, United Farm Tools, West Virginia Housing Association, Bellemead Coal Company, Little Coal Land Company, and Pfaff and Smith.
