Ralph Howard McDaniel, 81, of Sandwich, formerly of Plano, passed away Friday, October 21, 2005 at Willow Crest Nursing Pavilion in Sandwich.
He was born November 26, 1923 in Sleeper, MO, the son of William N. and Sarah Jane (Smith) McDaniel. He attended Buffalo High School in Buffalo, MO, until his junior year when he was drafted by the United States Army for WWII. Ralph served his country with honor and courage from May 1943 until December 1945, as a member of the 19th anti-aircraft artillery unit "Top Hat". He served in Northern France, Central Europe, the Rhineland, Normandy and Greenland. He was awarded five Bronze Stars and the Purple Heart upon his return home. He married Juanita J. "Mickey" Vance on April 18, 1950 in Harrison, AR. He was a member of Iron Workers Local 393 in Aurora. He enjoyed coon hunting, dog training and racing.
He is survived by his five children; Susan (Rod) Smith of Sheridan, IL, Douglas (Mary) McDaniel of O'Fallon, IL, Mitchell (Teresa) McDaniel of Naperville, IL, Dena (Tom) Heller of Plano, IL, Marnie (Lynn) Smith of Sheridan, IL; his son-in-law, George Larson of Newark IL, nineteen grandchildren, eleven great grandchildren; several nieces and nephews in Buffalo, MO.
He is preceded in death by his wife; his parents; one daughter, Lea Larson; one grandson, Ryan Smith.
A memorial Service will be held at 5:00 p.m., Sunday, October 23, 2005 at Turner Funeral Home in Plano. (1/4 mile west of Eldamain Road & Rt. 34 intersection).
