Evelyn K. Richie, age 95, of Chicago, Illinois passed away on Monday, May 23, 2005 at Hospice of the North Shore in Skokie, Illinois. She was born on December 3, 1909 in Fox Township, Kendall County, the oldest daughter of Elias and Ingeborg (Nelson) Knutson.
Evelyn was united in marriage in 1930 to Mr. Wilbur H. Buchholz and they spent the next 41 happy years of their lives together until his passing in 1972. She was later united in marriage, in 1974, to Dr. Leonard Richie. Eveyln was a school teacher, for two years, in Kendall County. She was a fore-runner in the tide of professional business women that helped to build America. In 1939, Evelyn and her first husband, Wilbur Buchholz, became the founders and Co-Owners of Guardian Metal Sales in Morton Grove, Illinois. Evelyn was a member of the American Metal Association and continued to be the owner and operator of Guardian Metal Sales until she sold the business in 1982.
Mrs. Richie was an active member of several Lutheran Churches. Evelyn was known to be a true philanthropist having been a member of the Lutheran Hong Kong Missionary Organization. She was very active throughout her life having been a patron of the Chicago Lyric Opera, a member of the Swithoid Club, a member of the Y.M.C.A. in Plano, Illinois and a member of the Kendall County Farm Bureau.
Evelyn and her late husband, Wilbur, were supporters of the National College of Chiropractic, having had a resident hall there in Lombard, names in their honor. Mrs. Richie also supported the Garret Theological Seminary with the Knutson Scholarship Fund. Evelyn enjoyed spending time outdoors and continued boating until age 90. She spent many happy times traveling and made many dear friends throughout the world. Mrs. Richie was a loving wife, sister and aunt who will be dearly missed by her family and many friends.
Mrs. Richie is survived by her husband, Dr. Leonard Richie of Chicago, Illinois; her sister, Carolyn Leifheit of Yorkville, Illinois; her sister-in-law, Margaret Knutson of Millbrook; her nieces and nephews, Judith (Grant) Harwig of Naperville, IL, Stephen (Mary) Knutson of Evanston, IL, Dianne (David) Stewart of Yorkville, IL, Robert (Lynn) Knutson of Des Plaines, IL, Craig (Jeanne) Leifheit of Yorkville, IL, Mary Ann Doetschman of Yorkville, IL, Joan Knutson of Yorkville, IL, Denise Folk of Des Moines, Iowa, Betty Frick of Marquette, Minnesota, Claudette (Walter) Carlson of Oak Park, IL, Lyric (Steve) Dold of Madison, Wisconsin and Joy Frick of Minneapolis, Minnesota; as well as several grand and great-grandnieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Elias (1940) and Ingeborg (1955) Knutson; her first husband, Wilbur Buchholz (1972)l her son, Douglas Alan Buchholz (1938, in infancy); her brothers, Alvin (1980) and Raymond (1988) Knutson; her sister, Charlotte Blake (1991); and her nephews, A. Jerry (1979) and David (2002) Knutson.
Funeral services for Mrs. Richie will be held at 10:00 A.M. on Thursday, May 26, 2005 at the Larson-Nelson Funeral Home, 410 E. Countryside Parkway, Yorkville, Illinois with Pastor James E. Reents officiating. Interment will follow in the Millington -Newark Cemetery in Millington , Illinois.
Friends may call from 4 until 8 P.M. on Wednesday, May 25, 2005 at the Larson-Nelson Funeral Home in Yorkville, Illinois.
