Lawson enlisted in the Confederate States Army on 14 March 1862 in Marianna, Jackson County, Florida. On the same date he was mustered and inspected as a private in Capt. Richard L. Smith's Cavalry Company (Marianna Dragoons), subsquently Company B, 15th Confederate Cavalry. He was 44 years old at the time of enlistment.
