Mary Denton Lamb, Excelsior Springs MO, age 100, passed away Tuesday, November 30 2010 in Bedford NH. Mary was born on May 20, 1910 on her grandparent's farm in Richmond MO, to John Russell and Nellie Blye (Jacobs) Denton. Mary was raised by her grandmother, Jennie (Ford) Jacobs, when her mother passed away in 1918. She graduated from Richmond High School in 1927. In the fall, she enrolled in Warrensburg Teachers College, where she completed sixty hours and received her teaching certificate. She began her teaching career at King School in 1929.
Glenn Paul Lamb and Mary were married in Lawson MO on February 3 1934.
Over the years, Mary taught at a number of schools, including King, Westward, Elmira, Baber, Ogg, Scott, and Greenwood. Her final teaching position began in 1957 with the Excelsior Springs School District. That same year, Mary received her Bachelor of Science in Education and in 1970 she earned her Masters Degree in Education from UMKC. As a result of Mary's advanced degree and certification as a Reading Specialist, she received a federal grant to establish the Excelsior Springs Remedial Reading Center. The center tutored elementary school children who were reading below their grade level. Mary spent the remainder of her career with the Excelsior Springs Reading Center.
In 1973, she was elected president of the local chapter of the Missouri National Education Association. She was active in the MNEA for most of her career. She was an Honorary Kentucky Colonel and was also a member of the Owsley Society. Mary taught many children over the years and raised five of her own. Her retirement in 1975 enabled her to join Daughters of the American Revolution and spend more time with her husband, Glenn, to whom she was married to for nearly fifty years before his passing in 1983.
Mary is survived by five children, Glenda L. Minnick and husband Bob of Richmond, Mary Joyce Shepherd and husband John of Excelsior Springs, Cecelia Janelle Criscione and husband Dr. James Criscione of St. Louis, Glen Paul Lamb of Myrtle Beach SC, and Zita Gayle Lamb of Bedford NH; half sister, Mildred Lee Werle; 14 grandchildren, Andy, Chris and Mark Minnick, John Glenn, Richard and David Shepherd, Carri Moentmann and Jason Evans, Jason, Montee and Jarrett Lamb, Rachel Bathedar, Malennda Zajac and Sybil Morgan; 19 great-grandchildren and numerous nieces, nephews, and friends. Besides her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by two sisters, Zula Mae Staponski and Willa Charlene Bates, and one granddaughter, Farrah Starr Lamb.
Funeral services will be at 11am Tuesday, December 7 2010 at the Polley Funeral Home, Excelsior Springs. Burial will be in the Sunny Slope Cemetery, Richmond. The family will receive friends from 6-8pm Monday, December 6 2010 at the Polley Funeral Home, Excelsior Springs. In lieu of flowers the family suggests memorial contributions be given to the Mary Denton Lamb Scholarship or Todd's Chapel United Methodist Church.
