Enlisted with the 25th Georgia Infantry, Company F "Altamaha Scouts", on 14 August 1861 and served until June 30, 1862.
Enlisted in Company K, 5th Georgia Cavalry, on May 3, 1863. He participated in the Atlanta Campaign, Noonday Church and Kennesaw Mountain.
Mortally wounded while serving with the Company K, 5th Georgia Cavalry in the Battle of Kennesaw Mountain in June 1864. He died later in an Atlanta hospital and left behind a widow and six children. They survived the severe winter of 1865 after Kirkpatrick's Foragers burned their small log cabin on Doctor's Creek by living in a pine bark hut.
