John Kratz served in the Continental Army during the Revolutionary War as a matross, whose job was to assist artillery gunners in loading, firing, sponging and moving the guns. There were many of these men encamped at Valley Forge during the winter of 1777-78, although documentation of John's exact service has not yet been located.
