Alfred Bennet Hix

Alfred Bennet Hix was born March 1st, 1841, in the township of Norwich, Huron county, Ohio, and died at Martinsburg, Iowa, December 14, 1914, at the age of 73 years and 9 months. When about twelve years old he came with his parents to this state and has spent most of his time in this county. He accepted Christ as his Saviour when about fourteen years of age. On February 2, 1867 he was received into the Free Will Baptist church by his father, who was the pastor at that time. He was one of the charter members of the Baptist church at Hedrick and remained a faithful member until the time of his death. On January 12th, 1869, at Agency, Iowa he was married to Minnie Durfey who is now left to mourn his loss. There are also two sons and five daughters who were with him during his last sickness. They are: Mrs. S. F. Silvers, of Farson; Chars. S., of Martinsburg; Mrs. W. M. Sommer of St. Joseph, Mo.; Mrs. Chas. Messerschmitt of Martinsburg; Mrs. J. S. Capps of St. Joseph, Mo.; Seth D., of Billings, Mont.; and Mrs. Oliver Wilcox of Hedrick, Iowa. One daughter passed away in her fourteenth year and a son died in infancy. There are twenty four great grand children. He enlisted in the 3rd Iowa Cavalry in 1861 and served his county faithfully during the whole period of the Civil war and was a member of the J. M. Hedrick Post at the time of his death. He has been a sufferer from injuries received during the war and toward the end his sufferings were great, but he was always patient, and kind and placed implicit trust in his Heavenly Father. He was a good husband, a kind and loving father, was always ready to help others and will be greatly missed but we know that for the Christian to die is gain. He has fought the good fight, finished his course and kept the faith. Funeral services were held in the M. E. church on Wednesday, December 16, conducted by Rev. Vance, assisted by Rev. Peck. Interment was made in the Brook's cemetery near Hedrick.
