| Birth: | unknown | | Death: | unknown | Pharaoh. Born the third son of Ahmose I and Ahmose Nefretiri. He became the second ruler of the 18th Dynasty after his elder brothers predeceased him. On reaching the throne, Amenhotep I led a campaign against the Libyans who had launched an invasion against the Egyptian delta. He led an army to the western border and defeated the Libyans and their allies. He then suppressed a rebellion by Nubia in about year eight of his reign. He initiated building projects such as the temple complex at Karnak. Upon his death following some 25 or 30 years on the throne, a cult sprang up centered upon him and he became regarded became a notable deity with a number of festivals throughout the year. He was probably the first pharaoh to build his tomb at a distance from his mortuary temple. The mortuary temple itself has been discovered but his tomb has not been positively identified. Some scholars believe it to be an undecorated tomb at Dra Abu el-Naga, while others believe it might be KV39. His mummy was found in the royal mummy cache discovered in 1881. (bio by: Iola)
