The funeral of P. Harry Carroll, 57 of 20 Euclid Avenue, who died yesterday in his home, will be held Thursday morning at O'Connor Brothers. A solemn high mass will follow at 9 in Sacred Heart Church. Burial, will be in St John's Cemetery. Calling hours at the funeral home are 7 to 10 tonight and 2 to 5 and 7 to 10 p.m. tomorrow.
Alhambra Council, K. of C, will meet at 7.30 p.m. tomorrow at the funeral home to recite the rosary.
Mr. Carroll was a retired' Worcester police sergeant and an Army veteran of World War I.
Members of the Holy Name Society of his parish will meet at 8 p. m. tomorrow at the funeral home to recite the rosary. He was born in Worcester, son of the late Daniel J. and Margaret (O'Leary) Carroll. He was appointed to the police force June 27, 1927 and was promoted to sergeant Nov. 8, 1948. He spent most of his police career in Precinct 3. and served a short time in the Detective Bureau.
Always popular with youngsters, Sergeant Carroll was called upon "by request" to award diplomas to the graduating class at Downing Street School in January 1950. The 17 graduates made the request because the sergeant had "watched them grow up from the first grade." City and School Department officials usually do the honors at grammar school graduations.
He retired Feb. 20. 1953.
He was also a member of Webster Square Post. A. L., and the Police Relief Association and was a third degree knight in Alhambra Council. K. of C. He leaves his wife, Mildred M. (Sullivan) Carroll; two sons, Harry F. Carroll of Worcester and Corp. Russell J.Carroll, USA, stationed at Aberdeern Proving Grounds, Md.; a daughter, Margaret M.,wife, of Thomas McNamara of Scheneectady, NY,a brother, Louis A. Carroll of Worcester, and three sisters, Mrs. Anna L. Santom, Mary F., wife of Edward F. Kennedy, and M. Irene, wife of Arthur J. Handfield Jr., all of Worcester.
