Autumn Sonata
September 23,1996

came into my life the same day as Dorian Grey. I went to the rescue league looking for a pet to fill the giant void of losing Nucha just 2 weeks earlier. I was still numb but stood there in the cage watching all these scurrying little creatures ignore me except Autumn who immediately jumped up and pulled off my glasses. As I bent over to retrieve them, another cat, a grey fluffy little creature yanked the pen out of my shirt pocket.Well that was the message loud and clear- both would go home with me that day, a blustery grey ominous day on Cape Cod.

She was the first I let out of the carrier when we arrived home and she immediately went for Grandma, much to Grandma's horror! And then we saw Dorian the grey fluffy one attempt to jump at least 5 times out of the carrier. He was just weeks old, so tiny and quiet.

They were best buddies, though very feisty with each other. She was already fixed and when it came time for him to be "altered" she nursed him. It was a powerful sight to see him, still drugged and wobbly, falling over and struggling so hard, and Autumn nudging him with her nose, urging him on, keeping him awake, keeping him moving.

I learned after a short time, for this was a small town, that the previous owner would beat her with a newspaper to discourage Autumn from jumping up on things and being a wild Indian. Her wildness was what made her special. Nothing could beat the sensation of walking into a room and having her coming charging toward you and leap up to the top of your head. And stay there for as long as you could stand it- taking in the sights.

January 2,2006

She passed away in her sleep. I found her in the morning on the floor at the bottom of the bed. Dorian above her on the bed, looking down mournfully, making tiny sad sounds.

Autumn was a lively rascal- a very special girl. She is very much missed.
