BORN IN SVENDBORG, DENMARK SAID TO BE THE YOUNGEST CUSTOMS INSPECTOR IN DENMARK WHEN HE AGREED TO BECOME PARTNERS IN A CALIFORNIA ORANGE GROVE WITH A FRIEND WHO HAD PREVIOUSLY EMMIGRATED. HE LEFT DENMARK ABOARD THE S.S. DANMARK. DURING A STORM AT SEA THE SHIP'S PROPELLER WAS SHEARED AND THE SHIP BEGAN TAKING ON WATER. WITH THE SHIP LISTING BADLY AND ALLOWED TO TAKE ONLY WHAT THEY COULD CARRY ON THEIR PERSON, ALL PASSENGERS WERE RESCUED BY THE S.S. HE WAS PUT ASHORE IN THE AZORES WITH ALL SINGLE MEN AS THE MISSOURI WAS OVERCROWDED AND REMAINED THERE FOR SOME TIME UNTIL PICKED UP BY ANOTHER SHIP AND TAKEN TO NEW YORK. NOW NEARLY BROKE, AS HIS FAIRLY LARGE BANKROLL (WHICH HAD BEEN PACKED IN HIS SUITCASE) WENT DOWN WITH THE DANMARK, HE WAS SET UP WITH A ROOMATE AND A JOB AS A PORTER IN A BARBERSHOP BY A DANISH IMMIGRANTS GROUP. HE BEGAN WORKING WITH HIS ROOMATE AS A HOUSE PAINTER. WHEN THE ROOMATE BROUGHT HIS FIANCEE TO THIS COUNTRY, SHE ARRIVED WITH HER MOTHER AND SISTER, CHRISTINE. HANS AND CHRISTINE MET AT THE WEDDING AND WERE THEMSELVES MARRIED APRIL 7, 1894. AFTER LEARNING ENGLISH, HANS WORKED AS A WHARFINGER AND THEN AN ACCOUNTANT FOR A STEAMSHIP COMPANY. HE AND CHRISTINE WERE MARRIED FOR ALMOST 34 YEARS AND WERE THE PARENTS OF DINA (WANNER), INGER (IVENS), ADELE (O'CONNOR), HANS ALEXANDER, AND HELENE (MURPHY). HANS DIED FROM PNEUMONIA AT THEIR HOME ON E. 5TH STREET IN BROOKLYN.
