Birth: Mar. 11, 1836
Derbyshire, England
Death: Aug. 12, 1921
Shelby County
Indiana, USA

George Wright, age eighty-five years, one of the largest land owners in Shelby county died Friday morning 12 Aug 1921, about eight o'clock, at his home in Waldron. Mr. Wright had been ill for several weeks. His death was caused by complication of diseases.

He had been a resident of Noble and Liberty townships for many years. Coming to this country as an immigrant from England, with but $8 in his pockets, he started work on a farm. At this time his knowledge of agriculture and the farm was limited to milking cows, it was said. Being determined to succeed and to learn, he quickly obtained a start. He had never seen a field of corn until his arrival in this country, and the sight was surprising to him. He learned rapidly, and being economical, was able to save. His first purchase was of a farm of one hundred acres. Later he added to the original purchase, buying land in Noble and Liberty townships until at the time of his death, he was the owner of approximately one thousand acres.

Mr. Wright was the son of William and Elizabeth (Gould) Wright, and was born in Bradborun, Derbyshire, England, on 11 Mar 1836. He was reared on a farm and was brought up as a dairyman. As a boy he attended of his native land, and obtained a good education. He believed that there was greater opportunity in America than in England, and came to this country, arriving on 2 Dec 1852 after a voyage of thirteen days.

He made his way to Noble township, this county, to the home of a brother, John Wright. Mr. Wright was married 2 Aug 1855 to Mary E. Avery. Three children were born to them. She died 5 Feb 1872, and Mr. Wright was again married on 3 Jun 1873 to Ellen Short. They had no children.

He leaves his widow; one daughter Mrs. Sophia Alley, of Noble township, and one son, Albert W. Wright of this county; one brother, Frank Wright, of England; two sisters, Eliza and Ann, of England.

Funeral arrangements were announced later by Stewart and Fix, who were in charge.
