Death: Jan. 27, 1989

Inventor, Aviation Pioneer. He was born in Kennsington, London. He started the Sopwith Aviation Company which produced newly designed military aircraft used in World War I. The most famous was the Sopwith Camel which shot down over 2700 planes, including Germany's Red Baron. He continued to develop military aircraft that was used in World War II. He designed the first all metal aircraft and the world's first vertical lift off plane. He founded the world's first test pilot school. He was knighted in 1953 and inducted into the International Aerospace Hall of Fame in 1979. (bio by: Bigwoo)
