1848: Jacob Kelley donated the land where Kelleytown Baptist Church and Cemetery is located, in 1848. His house (ca. 1820), on the opposite corner from the church, is now on the 'National Register of Historical Places.' 1860: Jacob 75; Charity 72; US census, p. 406B, line 27, [www.rootsweb.com/~usgenweb/sc/darlington/census/406b.gif] 1865: Jacob Kelly's house was used as a Union headquarters on March 2-3, 1865 by Major General John E. Smith, Commander of the 3rd Division, 15th Army Corps. Jacob, age 85, escaped to an island in the nearby Segars Mill Pond. 1865: A cousin of Jacob's, Martha Kelley, daughter of George Washington Kelley, married a Union Officer, Charlie Harris. Martha met Captain Harris in 1865, when he was with Maj Gen John Smith, Commander of the 3rd Div, 15th Corps. Martha was 16 years old when Sherman's army came through Kelleytown. Martha's great-grandfather, David Kelley, was Jacob Kelley's uncle.
