On October 1, 1862, William "Bangor" Fugate followed the lead of his younger brother Nathaniel "Hunter" Fugate, when he left the security of his farm and went off to fight in the Civil War.
Bangor enlisted in Company I of the 13th Kentucky Cavalry under the command of Col. Benjamin Caudill at Whitesburg in Letcher County, Kentucky. He served with that command through many battles in Kentucky and Virginia.
Bangor was also involved in one of Breathitt County's darkest moments when he was selected to pull the lever on the scaffold of "Bad" Thomas Smith. The old story is told in the family that Bangor asked to "do the deed" as he and Smith had exchanged words during a "run in" at some time before.
William "Bangor" Fugate lived to the ripe old age of 89 and died on April 4, 1920 at his home on Cockrell's Fork of Lost Creek. After a brief service at his home, his body was taken to the Fugate Family Cemetery where he was buried beside his daughter, Sarah Ann, the first person to be buried in that cemetery. A simple stone was placed on his grave many years later with one word etched to mark his grave, "Bangor." On Saturday, August 8, 1998, the Breathitt, Perry and Letcher County chapter of the Sons of Confederate Veterans placed a Veterans Administration marker at the grave of this fallen Confederate hero. He now lies marked so that the many generations to follow our own may know the burial location of each man who fought for what he believed was right.

15 Fugates fought with the 13th Cav.
