Mitchell "Uncle Mitch" Peeler
Birth: 1845
Sardis
Union County
South Carolina, USA
Death: Feb. 11, 1918
Columbia
Richland County
South Carolina, USA

Uncle Mitch, as he was affectionately called was born into slavery in the Winter of 1845. He was born to a slave woman named Polly who was my paternal great great great grandmother. He had one older brother named Moses and two older sisters named Susan and Charlotte on record. My paternal great great grandmother Charlotte Peeler Corry was his older sister. In my discoveries Uncle Mitch was well known in the Union, Cherokee and York Counties of South Carolina. He was a Blacksmith and basket weaver by trade and had a talent for music. Uncle Mitch played the fiddle and banjo and performed for many corn shucking and fish fry gatherings. As the years went on, he began to have memory loss and became reclusive. There were times he would wander off and not return for weeks much to the distress of his family and the towns people who cared for him. When his condition worsened it was necessary to place him in the State Hospital for his own protection. I was informed by the Columbia State Hospital Doctors that his diagnosis in modern times would have been Alzheimer's disease. Uncle Mitch was well known for his joyful spirit and adventurous stories. I love and admire him for the way he coped and embraced life. May the Lord hold Uncle Mitch in His care.
