Born in Cleveland, son of John J. and Agnes (Witting) Berg. He was raised in Portage County and was a graduate of Ravenna Township High School. In 1934, he founded Berg Motor Company, which distributed Reo trucks. A Democrat, Berg was an active member of the East Akron and Ellet boards of trade, and of the Trade Council. He served six years as an Akron ward councilman, and was a delegate to the 1956 and 1960 Democratic National Conventions.
