George and Esther Lambert Gardner moved to Springville, Utah some time after September 1866, where a little girl, Esther Annie, was born to Esther. Besides Annie's two full sisters--Mary Jane and Martha Eliza--George and Esther were also rearing a boy and girl previously born to George's second wife, Esther Hill before she died in 1861. The family had moved a number of times--from Springville to Gunnison to Fayette and finally back to Springville. In 1868 the family made its final move to Levan, Juab County.
Soon after the family moved to Levan, tragedy struck. According to George Grant Gardner's biographical sketch of his grandmother (Esther Lambert Gardner), "little blonde... Esther Annie, was playing with [her] older sister, Sarah,...and Sarah's friend at the time the accident occurred. The older girls had each taken Esther Annie by the hand and were running with her, when they stumbled and fell. The little girl fell over a protruding rock. She was hurt internally and died as a result of the accident, January 6, 1871, at the age of two years."
Since the family was living in Levan at the time, it is almost certain that she was buried in Levan Cemetery. We met with Levan cemetery personnel and determined that there are three unmarked graves in her father's plot, one of which we have assigned to Esther Annie Gardner. However, there is no surviving gravestone and no record of her burial there. This online memorial is a testament to her brief life. (Dale G. Bailey, June 22, 2013).
