"Polly" was the daughter of William & Delilah George. She first married John Van Winkle 25 May 1830 in Clark County, Illinois, and probably had children with him. But John died on the way to Texas, and when Polly entered Texas, she was "a Christian lady head of family who entered Nacogdoches in 1832." [Translation of affidavit regarding Spanish entry certificate no. 448 by Jackye Plummer.]

After Polly had been in Texas for almost eight years, she married John Monroe Chisum on 25 Oct 1840 in Marshall, Harrison County, Republic of Texas. Polly followed John Chisum in his land dealings in Harrison County, Cherokee County, Grayson County, Limestone County, and Greer County, Texas, and raised six more children. The six children were Elijah Monroe Chisum, William M Chisum, Elizabeth Olivia Chisum Barron, John Claiborne Chisum, Delilah Ann Chisum Chisum, and Martha Leona Chisum Steele.

My father handed down the story that Polly was afraid of snakes, which earned her the nickname "Pistol-Packing Polly" because she always carried a pistol in her apron and could shoot the head off a rattler before it could coil to strike.
