Mary Elizabeth Sigler was born to Eli and Rhoda Hurly Sigler. Of her early life we know little, with the exception that something catastrophic happens and her parents and at least 2 other children die.
Mary Elizabeth marries William Jefferson Goodwin on 16 March 1852 in Greencastle, Putnam Co, Indiana. William, born 16 Feb 1825 in Harrison County, West Va, was the son of Francis and Sarah Greathouse Goodwin. They have 11 children, 9 of which survive to adulthood. William dies in 1899 in Rantoul, Ks where they had farmed for many years and was buried there.
Mary travels to Canon City to live with her son, Lewis and his wife Clara Bell Staneart Goodwin. There she meets one J. H. Hightower apparently a local minister. They wed on 20 Apr 1902, Mary dies 6 Sept 1902. Mary Elizabeth is buried in Greenwood Cemetery (Pioneer section)in Sept of 1902.
Letters from my great grandmother, Clara Bell Staneart Goodwin, speak of how sad Mary Elizabeth was after her beloved Williams death. She believed Mary only remarried because she felt like a burden on her family. She mourned her William even after her new marriage. Clara always believed Mary died from grief.
I hope she is with her William now.
