LAURA WHITFIELD MILLER
Services for Mrs. Laura Whitfield Miller, of Mart, were at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, April 19, 2003 at Mount Pleasant Baptist Church in Mart. Burial was in the Doris Miller Cemetery. Rev. Willie Hurth Jr. officiated. A wake was on Friday, April 18, 2003 at 6:00 p.m. at W.H. Littles & Sons Morturay in Waco. Mrs. Miller was an educator and devoted her life to developng the young minds of our children. She was employed by Mart Independent School District. Survivors include her husband, John Miller; son, Ernest Wayne Whitfield of Mico, Texas; sister, Katherine Kelly of Long Beach, CA; brother, James Graham of Mart; daughter-in-law, Karen D. Whitfield; and grandchildren, John Wesley Perry III, Candice Renee and Brian Whitfield.
Mrs. Laura Graham Whitfield Miller was a lady who possessed a sweet, sweet spirit and a charming and affectionate smile. She was born to the parentage of the Late John and Margret Graham in Mart, Texas.
She is a graduate of Mart Independent School district and furthered her educational dream by obtaining a Bachelor of Science Degree from Paul Quinn College and did additional graduate work at Prairie View AM University and Baylor University.
Mrs. Miller professed a faith in Christ at an early age. She united with Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church in Mart, Texas where she served as past president of the missionary society, Sunday School teacher for the Women's class, and was active in various other capacities. One of her greatest loves was the ministry of music where she began serving as a young child. Mrs. Miller served as musician for several years for Union Baptist Church, Good Samaritan Baptist Church, Mustang Baptist Church, Mt. Zion Baptist and was the musician at Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church until her death .. She firmly believed, if you could open your mouth you can sing. It was in Waco, Texas that Laura Graham and Ernest Whitfield met and married on October 10, 1951. To
this holy matrimony two children were born -a son, Ernest Wayne Whitfield and a daughter, the late Cynthia Joyce Perry. They shared many beautiful moments as a result of their mutual love and respect for one another. After the death of her husband, she later married John Miller on December 23, 1989. She was a loving wife, mother, sister, daughter and grandmother to her family. Mrs. Miller was an educator and devoted her life to developing the young minds of our children. She was employed by the Mart Independent School District and later worked and retired from the Marlin Independent School District. She was affiliated with the Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc. and Heroines of Jericho and was very active in the community.
And it came to pass ... on Thursday morning, April 10, 2003. We envisioned God stepping out into space and saying to Laura - "Well done my good and faithful servant, you have fought a good fight, you have finished your course, you have kept the faith, henceforth there is laid up for you a crown of righteousness."
She leaves to cherish her memories: a devoted husband, John Miller of Mart, Texas; one son, Ernest Wayne Whitfield of Mico, Texas; one sister, Catherine Kelly, of Long Beach, CA; one brother, James Graham of Mart, Texas; a loving and devoted daughter-in-law, Karen Denise Whitfield of Mico, Texas; three grandchildren, John Wesley Perry III, Candice Renee and Brian Whitfield and a host of other relatives and
