Francis Leroy Hammond was born April 19, 1839 in Lancaster, South Carolina. He was the son of Leroy (l801-1881) and Nancy (Gooch) Hammond (l807-1887) and the great grandson of Samuel Hammond, who was a Revolutionary Soldier. Francis Leroy's parents are buried in Monroe County, Miss. Francis Leroy was brought to Mississippi as a young child, along with his eleven brothers and sisters. Leroy and his brothers John and Charles, were the best educated of the family.. They were taught by the college professor, Mr. Holt, from Virginia. Professor Holt had lost his job because of drink and came to Kilmicheal, Mississippi where he taught the Hammond children. Leroy could read Latin and Greek just like English. It was Leroy's desire to become a doctor, but since he could not stand the dissecting room, he quit. He taught school and farmed. Leroy married Emma Catherine Miller, daughter of Abram Miller, in l867, in Winston County. Their children were: 1. Iola Married Will Dixon, 2 John Leroy--never married. He is buried in the Masonic Cemetery. 3 William Price married Dorothy Agnis Sloan 4 Emma Catherine married Leo Rogers. They lived in Calvert, Alabama. 5 Fannie married Luther Beens and they lived in Calvert, Alabama. Leroy never used tobacco in any form, never cursed or drank whiskey. He was a Civil War Soldier and served in Company B, 15th Regiment, Winona, Mississippi. He died March 9, 1917 at the age of 76 at the home of his daughter, Emma Catherine, in Calvert, Alabama. Leroy's wife Emma Catherine, died August 5, 1906. They are buried in the Masonic Cemetery in Louisville. Winston Co and Its People by Nancy Parkes 1980
