Nelle Parker, 56, school teacher in Jackson county for 35 years, died at her home after an illness of about a year.

She was born in Makanda, Jackson County, Ill., on Feb. 5, 1892, the daughter of Benjamin F. and Lottie Parker. She and her family moved to Murphysboro shortly thereafter.

Nelle graduated from Murphysboro Township High School in 1909 and then completed two years of college. She was teaching at Longfellow School by 1923 and later taught at Logan School until her retirement in 1947.

She belonged to the Murphysboro Teachers Association, which she headed for three years, and to the Southern Division of the Illinois State Teachers Association.

Nelle was a very active member of the First Baptist Church, where she taught the Mary Magdaline class and directed the choir.

She died in Murphysboro on Nov. 6, 1948.
