Cecil Leon Abbott
Dec. 26, 1938 – Jan. 11, 2005
Funeral services were held on Friday, Jan. 14 in the Wood Family Funeral Service Chapel for long-time Tehachapi resident Cecil Leon Abbott, 66, who passed away at his home on Jan. 11.
Cecil was born on Dec. 26, 1938, in Checotah, Okla. to George Cecil and Mattie Abbott. At the age of 6, he moved with his family to Kern County where he attended local schools, graduating from Arvin High School. Cecil went on to attend Bakersfield Junior College before joining the U.S. Army.
In 1965, Cecil married the love of his life, Dolores Gossage, in Delano. They moved to Tehachapi in 1965. A year later, Cecil went to work as an officer at the California Correctional Institution, where he remained for the next 29 years.
Cecil was a dedicated family man. His wife and son were the center of his world. He also had a great love of animals and will be remembered by his friends for his dedicated care of his ducks and tortoises. He was an avid reader, preferring Westerns. He often travelled to Susanville where he took gunsmithing classes at Lassen College. After retirement he also took courses on jewelry making. He was a man with many hobbies, including playing bingo, and many friends. He enjoyed the outdoors, hunting and fishing, garage sales and antiquing.
Cecil was a good friend to many and will be greatly missed by those who knew and loved him, including his dog, Brandi.
Cecil is survived by his wife of 40 years, Dolores Abbott and son, Aaron Abbott, both of Tehachapi; and sister, Beulah Montgomery of Bakersfield. He was preceded in death by his brother, Gene Abbott in 2000.
Doctor Marvin Slifer officiated at the service. Interment followed at the Tehachapi Public Cemetery, Eastside.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in his memory to a charity he supported, the Alzheimers Association of Kern County, 5500 Olive Drive, Bakersfield, CA 93308.
Wood Family Funeral Service handled the arrangements.
