2nd Lieutenant Atkins was the pilot of U.S. Army Air Corps B-24E Liberator #41-29065, serving with the 29th Bomb Group, 411th Bomb Squadron, from Gowen Field.

He was one of eight airmen who perished when the bomber struck a mountainside, 40 miles southwest of Boise, in Owyhee County, Idaho, during a navigational training flight.
