| Birth: | Sep. 6, 1815 | | Death: | Aug. 30, 1902 |  Civil War Confederate Brigadier General. An ardent Confederate supporter, he recruited a company for the 12th Tennessee Infantry in 1861, was elected Captain and soon advanced to Colonel in command of the 12th Tennessee. He led troops at the Battles of Belmont, Shiloh and in the Battle of Richmond. In 1863, he was transferred to cavalry command, in the Armies of West Tennessee and northern Mississippi. Promoted Brigadier General in February 1865, he fought in various Tennessee campaigns until he surrendered his corps at the end of the war.
