Obituary for William M. Bird, Iola Daily Register, 4/27/1932:
Old Indian Fighter Dies.
End Comes to William Bird 82-Year Old Scout in Indian Wars.
William M. Bird, 82-year-old veteran of the Indian wars, is dead.
Coming to Kansas before the Iola townsite was platted, the aged Indian fighter herded cattle over ground that now is included within the limits of the city.
Later he joined the army and upon his death still held his discharge from the government as a scout. So far as is known, Mr. Bird was the last remaining scout in the county. D.D. Spicer, formerly of Geneva, and a scout in the same campaigns, having preceded him to his death by some months.
The Rev. A.V. Howland will conduct the funeral service tomorrow at 2 p.m. at the Sleeper service rooms. Burial will be made in the old cemetery.
Mr. Bird is survivied by a daughter, Mrs. Arthur Dugan, Iola, and by four other children.
