Mr. Ed Harvey, aged about 70 years, died in Cornelius beat last Sunday.

[The Southern Democrat, July 31, 1902]

Edward "Ed" Demosthenes Harvey was the son of Edward Garland Harvey and Olivia W. Hill Harvey. Very little is known about Demosthenes's siblings, except for their names, as listed in census records: Socrates (1835-unk), Cicero (1836-1909), M. E. (abt 1841-unk), Sarah (1845-unk), and Issac (1851-unk). Demosthenes was residing in Tallapoosa County, AL by 1854. His father died in Talbot County, GA before Nov 1856, and in January 1857, Demosthenes was appointed guardian of his two young brothers, Michael and Issac.

Demomosthenes Harvey and Miss Mary Barksdale were married on June 12, 1853 in Talbot County, Georgia.

Demosthenes enlisted with Company A, 25th Regiment AL Inf in 1862. Captured by the Union forces at Missionary Ridge, Tenessee on Nov. 24, 1863; arrived at Military Prison at Louisville, KY, Dec. 6, 1863; transferred to and arrived at the Rock Island, Illinois Prison Camp Dec. 10, 1863; transferred for exchange Feb. 25, 1865, received at Boulwares Wharf, Virginia March 5, 1865. Upon discharge he returned to his parent's home in Tallapoosa County, AL. Rumors are that he arrived home very tattered and haggard indicating a rough journey home. He moved to Coosa County, AL soon after returning home. Sometime in the year 1867 Demosthenes moved his family to somewhere in TN. Before 1870,the family returned to Alabama and settled on a farm just south of Steele, St. Clair County. Demosthenes moved to Blount County, AL, near Oneonta, where he purchased a farm on October 4, 1873. His wife, Mary B. Harvey died about 1874-5. Children of E. D. and Mary were: John E. Harvey, William Franklin Harvey, Thomas Jefferson Harvey, James Boston Harvey, Emma Arminda Harvey, Mary Etta Harvey, and Michael Harvey. Demosthenes married Eliza C. Tyler, on August 27, 1876. Mary Etta ran away from home sometime after 1880. Family researchers believe that she and her step-mother did not get along. No trace of her has ever been found. Edward and Eliza had one daughter, Dora Eudoshia Harvey.
UPDATE! Mary Etta has been found!
