Moses W. Formwalt
Birth: 1820
Death: May 26, 1852

Atlanta Mayor. Served as first Mayor of Atlanta from 1848 to 1849 after Atlanta changed its name from Marthasville. He was whiskey still maker who ran as part of the the Free and Rowdy Party. In 1851, he became a DeKalb County Deputy-Sheriff. He was killed May 1, 1852 when he was stabbed to death while escorting a prisoner from Council Chambers, becoming the first Dekalb County Deputy-Sheriff killed in the line of duty. When it was brought to the city's attention in the year 1900, that the first Mayor of Atlanta had no stone to mark his grave, a committee began to go about selecting a suitable monument. After governmental slowness and delay, it was finally put in place in 1916. He is buried at Atlanta's Oakland Cemetery. A street in Atlanta still bears his name. (bio by: Evening Blues)
