Revolutionary War veteran. Enlisted at Charlestown, South Carolina in July 1776. He was an orderly sergeant in the First Regiment of South Carolina troops. He enlisted again in March 1781 in North Carolina, under Col. Nathaniel Greene, and was in the battles of Guilford Court House and Eutaw Springs, where he was wounded in the thigh. He settled in Perry County, Indiana with his wife, Sythe Blake Sommers, and their children.

NOTE: Many family trees list James as James Taylor Lanman, but in every record he ever appeared on he was listed only as James Lanman, without any middle name or initial.
