Charles enlisted in Co. D, 10th Massachusetts Infantry, on 21 Jun 1861 and was mustered out on 26 Mar 1863. He then enlisted in Co. C, 4th Massachusetts Cavalry, on 06 Jan 1864 and was mustered out a second time on 14 Nov 1865 at Richmond, VA.
About 1880, he married Margaret Fogarty. They had three children, and two were still living in 1900 -- Charles S. and daughter, Lisadore (sic). In 1918, his widow, Margaret, applied for a pension based on his service.
