"Deceased was born in Baden, Germany, and came to this country in 1840. He first settled in Phila., where he was employed in a wholesale grocery store. In 1857 he came to Reading and purchased a piece of ground at 10th and Chestnut, where he erected 8 houses. He opened a wholesale and retail grocery store in the corner building which he occupied until his death, a period of 40 years. He owns a large number of properties and was very successful in businesses. He is survived by his widow Marie; one son, Frederick Wilhelm; 4 granddaughters, and one sister, Mrs. Eva Leopold, of Baden, Germany. He was one of the oldest and most active members of St. John's German Lutheran Church and the German Lodge of Odd Fellows. He leaves many friends."
