'Was living in Bryan, Ohio, engaged in farming, when he enlisted Sept. 10, 1861, at the early age of 17, as a private in Co. E, 38th O.V.I.,3d Brig., 3d Div., 14th A.C.; he was transferred to 105th O.V.I., while his Regt. was home on a furlough. Sept. 2d., 1864, he was in field hospital near Atlanta for gunshot wound received in foot at Jonesboro, and was honourably discharged at Columbus, Ohio, from hospital Nov. 16, 1864, on surgeon's certificate of disability. During enlistment he was detailed to guard supply train from Chattanooga to Bridgeport in Dec. 1863; his battle list includes Wild Cat Mt., Mill Springs, Corinth, Stone River, Perryville, Mission Ridge, and Jonesboro. In front of Atlanta, Mr. Stewart, with a number of his comrades, became engaged in a personal duel with a number of Rebel sharpshooters, in which the Rebs got the worst of the game. He was born July 1st, 1843, in Van Wert county, Ohio, and settled in Williams county, Ohio, in March 1883; his father, William Stewart, is still living, but his mother, Isabelle (Logan), is deceased; he was married in Defiance, Ohio, Feb. 29th, 1875, to Mary C. Smith, born Oct. 7, 1852; her father, Alanson Smith, was a soldier in 95th O.V.I., is still living, as is also her mother, Hannah (Hopkins). To this union the following children have been born - Charles G., John W., Laura E.A., Jennie, deceased, James E., and Harry E. Mr. Stewart had one brother in the Union service, Robert Stewart, in Co. E, 111th. O.V.I. Comrade Stewart belongs to Hiram Louden Post 155, draws a pension, is a teamster and his postoffice address is Montpelier, Ohio.'
