My Beloved Father

SERAFIN SANDOVAL IBARRA
Jan. 4, 1918 - Aug. 4, 1992.

My dad Serafin was born January 4, 1918 at Rancho Valedores in Nochistlan, Zacatecas, Mexico to Tiburcio and Amada Sandoval Ibarra. He spent most of his childhood on the ranch and later moved to the town of Nochistlan. On the ranch were many farm animals, which Serafin's father Tiburcio would raise and sell for income. He also grew and sold tabacco. My dad owned his own horse which he loved to ride.

Dad moved to St. Johnsville, New York in 1943, and worked on the railroad. During this time he met my mother Margaret and fell in love. Serafin knew very little English and Margaret didn't speak or understand Spanish at all. They fell in love and Serafin married Margaret Dingman on October 6, 1945. When Serafin passed away in 1992, they had been married for 46 years.

In 1956, Dad began his long career with Jackson & Perkins in Arizona. In 1967, the Jackson & Perkins Rose Co. decided to move their rose operations to Wasco, CA., and Serafin was one of the first families that Jackson & Perkins Co. moved to Wasco. Serafin continued working for Jackson and Perkins until his retirement in 1984.

After retirement, Dad kept busy, working in his garden, keeping his yard work done and helping others. But his first love was the volunteer work he did for St. John's Church, helping where ever he was needed. Not only did he open the church for services and get the alter ready for Mass, he was also a Eucharist Minister and was studying to become a Deacon of the church.

Dad believed strongly in family, and he loved his family deeply, giving advise when asked and also helping family. He always had a hug and kiss for his children, and grandchildren. He enjoyed sharing stories of his younger days.

He also helped others, there were times at church, Serafin would meet someone who was trying to get home to Mexico and didn't have any money. Serafin would bring them to his home, his wife Margaret would make them breakfast, and Serafin would take the person to the bus station, purchase a bus ticket for him, give him a little cash, and put him on the bus. Sometimes the person would refuse to take any cash from my father, would just ask my dad to take him down to the sheriff's station and ask for immergration to be called. Even in these dangerous times, my father still helped others.

Dad instilled in us, faith, love, respect, responsibility, a strong work ethic and family is everything.

Our father Serafin, was everything to us, we all deeply miss him. I miss seeing him puttering around his yard, his singing "Happy Birthday" to me on the telephone, his hugs and kisses. I know he is free of the pain he suffered on earth while ill, and I believe he is doing all kinds of volunteer work in Heaven. That was my dad, always lending a helping hand. Till we meet again Daddy, I love you.

Daughter Rose

A Prayer for Serafin

Eternal rest grant unto Serafin, O Lord.
And let perpetual light shine upon him.
May he rest in peace.
May his soul and all the souls of the faithful departed,
Through the mercy of God, rest in peace.
Amen.

DAD
He wasn't a hero known by the world,
But a hero he was to his little girl,
I knew his voice before I could speak,
And loved it when he would sing me to sleep,
He taught us life's lessons of right from wrong,
And instilled in us values that we might be strong,
And so through the years like a hero he stood,
Working to give all that he could,
His presence was important and we loved to see him smile,
For no one in the world could emulate his style,
And so dear Dad my best memory to recall,
Is the gift of your presence the greatest gift of all.

MISS YOU DAD, GOODNIGHT
When I think about the old days
I want them back again,
Our house was always happy,
And full of laughter then.

We'd all be there together
Content in every way,
Then the mainstream of the family,
Simply went away.

We, all of us, do the best we can
But it will never be the same,
We can't tell you how often,
We all still speak your name.

All I wish is that once more,
Before I lower the light,
I could only kiss him on the cheek
And say I love you dad......Goodnight.
