Charles Howard Dana died at his home in Thayne on September 13, 2006 with his loving wife and family at his side. He was Bron December 22, 1919 in Bedford to Isacc Franklin and Lella Howard Dana
Charles attended school in Thayne and Afton. During the Depression, it was Charles' job ot milk the cows while his dad and older brothers drove trucks and did other odd jobs. The family all had to work together to pay for the ranch they had just purchased.
Charles worked the harvest each fall, hauling grain bundles and putting up hay, resulting in him starting school about a month late each year, making school very difficult. He was on the wrestling team for four years and enjoyed agriculture class. He make a trip with the judging team to Laramie and Fort Collins.
In 1940 he enlisted in the United states Army with his friend, Leland Skinner. The first year he was stationed at Fort Douglas, Utah. He was later assigned to mechanics. In the fall of 1941, he convoyed to San Francisco, where he was shipped out. He was in Pearl Harbor on December 1, 1941 and at sea when the United States declared war on Japan. He was in Australia for a short time and then on to India, where he remained until he returned to the States in December 1944. He was sent to Arizona and Nevada before being released in July 1945.
Charles married Olive Elaine Heap on December 27, 1945 in Ogden Utah. Their marriage was later solemnized in the Idaho Falls LDS Temple on September 15,1970
Health problems took Charles off the ranch and he operated a service station for awhile and did some other jobs before taking over the Massy-Ferguson dealership.
Charles and Elaine built a hardware store and operated it for many years, it is now the Dana Place. They built a new Dana True Value, which they later retired from and sold because of health problems. It is now Thayne True Value.
Charles served on the Thayne City Council for four years and then served as the Mayor of Thayne for three terms; six years.
He is survived by his wife, four children; 19 grandchildren and 20 great grandchildren, three sisters, Delsa Skinner, Romona Bradshaw and Betty Kelly.
Funeral services were held Saturday, September 16, 2006 in the Thayne LDS Stake Center. Burial took place in the Thayne Cemetery.
