Ross Garrett, 91, of Madisonville, passed away Tuesday, December 14, 2010 at his home. Funeral services are scheduled for 2 p.m. Friday, December 17, at First Baptist Church in Madisonville, with Brother Troy Brooks officiating. Burial will follow in Madisonville City Cemetery. The family will receive visitors from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Friday, prior to the service at the church.
Ross Garrett was born May 30, 1919 in Nacogdoches, Texas. He graduated from Stephen F. Austin University with a Bachelor of Science in agriculture, and was the County Extension Agent for Madison County for 26 years.
Ross served his country during World War II in the U.S. Army Air Corp where he retired as a 1st Lieutenant. During the war he was awarded the American Defense Service Medal, the Asiatic-Pacific Theater Campaign Medal, and received a Purple Heart. On May 1, 1943 while flying his 17th mission, Ross's airplane was shot down in the China-Burma-India Theater where he was a prisoner of war from 1943 to 1945.
Ross was a Mason, a Worthy Patron with the Eastern Star, a member of The Lions Club, First Baptist Church, and the Madison County Retired Teacher's Association. He was also a member of The Texas A&M Extension Service, the National County Agents' Association, and also assisted in forming The Madison County Farm Bureau and The Madison County Fair.
Survivors include his children, Sharron Standley, Sylvia Dean and husband, Dale, Edmon Garrett and wife, Judy, and David Garrett and wife, Catherine Loraine; and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren, a sister, and a niece.
