His parents were Leopold and Bertha (Wunderlich) Cuny. He grew up in Chicago and attended Sabin Junior High School.
Cuny was the navigator on B-24J #42-73080, assigned to the 10th Air Force, 7th Bombardment Group, 492nd Bombardment Squadron. They crashed on final approach to Kurmitola airbase in India, having flown from Kunming China. All aboard, except the co-pilot, were killed.
Cuny received the Purple Heart.
