Birth: Dec. 24, 1906
Michigan, USA
Death: Dec. 24, 1913
Calumet
Houghton County
Michigan, USA

Italian Hall victim.
He died on his 7th birthday.
He was the son of Johan/John Heikkinen (1878-1953) and Edla/Gustava nee Niska (1877-1945), who were both immigrants from Finland. The couple married on September 9, 1901 in Calumet. They had children Axel (1902-1954), Eino (1903-1913), Elis (1904-1913), John/Ernest (1905-1936), Edwin (1906-1913), Ellina/Elaine (1908-1990), Ida (1910-1932), Hulda/Helen (1911-1997), and Lydia/Mabel (1913-1927). Armas (1915-1970) and Florence (1919-1996) were born later. Edwin's brothers Elis and Eino were also killed at the Italian Hall. Brother Axel was trapped on the Italian Hall stairway and injured but survived. A story related by journalist Ella Bloor reveals the depth of the impoverished strikers' bitterness over the deaths at the Italian Hall and who they held responsible. The mother of three Finnish children killed at the Italian Hall, presumably referring to Gustava, was offered money for funeral expenses by the mine owner-backed Citizens Alliance. She refused to take the money, denouncing it as "blood money." She also reportedly had to be held back from throwing herself into her sons' graves at the funeral.
