Conrad Morsch, a son of Anna Maria (née Hartfelder) and Johann Jacob Morsch, was born in Rinklingen, a village near Karlsruhe, Baden--now in Germany's Baden-Württemberg state. In Rinklingen, Conrad Morsch married Ernestine Brandner on 12 January 1830, and there the couple had twelve children; nine survived to immigrate to the United States. The Morsch family became Illinois pioneers.
"Dissatisfied with conditions in Germany, in particular the strict military requirements and exorbitant taxes great-grandfather [Conrad] Morsch began to plan to bring his big family to America, where freedom and opportunity were to be found. Consequently, on May 24, 1847, he set forth from Rotterdam with his wife [and nine children, landing in Baltimore 9 weeks later]...
"One decided advantage which they had was the assurance of a welcome in the new land. Great-grandfather had a sister, a Mrs. Kessler, living somewhere in Pennsylvania; and a brother, Joseph who had a farm in LaSalle County, Illinois. The latter had urged them to come west...
"Arriving in LaSalle County, great-grand- father Morsch purchased a farm north of Ottawa, 160 acres of government land at $1.25 per acre. Here the family settled and soon felt at home in their adopted country. The younger children went to school in Ottawa and enjoyed what advantages were available to those pioneers..." Conrad and Ernestine Morsch had two more children in LaSalle County's Freedom Township, where Conrad farmed until his death in 1866 at the age of 60. His widow remained on the family farm until her death in 1877 at the age of 69.
