Born the son of an insurance agent, Lait's family left New York and moved to Chicago in 1890 where he attended grammar school, entering the Lewis Institute when he was 19 and graduating two years later. Lait works as a war correspondent and won international fame for his on-the-spot scoop and story of the the FBI gunning down John Dillinger in Chicago. He also covered the Hauptmann, Snyder-Gray and Mad Dog Crowley executions and was also on Woodrow Wilson's campaign train as a reporter. For a time, Lait was a political advisor for Franklin D. Roosevelt, when he was governor of New York. Lait later went to work for ‘Variety,' following a side with the Hearst newspapers. In the early 1920's Lait started writing vaudeville acts and wrote for the likes of Sophie Tucker, Emma Carus, Jackie Osterman, Annette Kellerman, Olga Baclanova and several others. Lait is also credited with writing several silent films, some for the actor Wallace Reid. In addition he wrote lyrics for several songs in collaboration with Con Conrad. Lait's sons followed in his footsteps, both going into the newspaper business, and both being on the staff of ‘Variety.' Lait insisted that his sons make their own way and went so far as to fire one of them at a company he worked for so no one would accuse him of nepotism. In 1953 he was confined to his home with a circulatory ailment which had him bedridden for 18 months, he passed away peacefully while in a coma.
