Sophia was the youngest child of Noah and Rachel Merrill Porter of Farmington. They had five children - three sons and two daughters.

On April 20th, 1808 Sophia was married to Rev. Heman Humphrey by her brother, Rev. Noah Porter at Fairfield. They spent the first years of their married life in Farmington, then moved to Pittsfield, Massachusetts.

Heman and Sophia had ten children:
