Andrew was born in Trenton, old Hunterdon (now Mercer) Co., NJ, the son of Capt. Robert Chambers of Trenton, NJ and his wife Francina Reeder. He married Sarah Ann Hyde on 23 Feb. 1836 in Philadelphia, Philadelphia Co., PA.

He was reportedly appointed by Governor Johnson as his aide-de-camp, and also served on the staff of Gen. Bennett with the rank of colonel. He was a resident of Philadelphia, and a partner with his nephews John H. Chambers and Andrew Cattell in the firm of Chambers & Cattell, leather merchants.
