|Death: ||Dec. 26, 2004|
Ben was born the beloved son of Robert and Hope (Brown) Abels. He was a graduate of Miami University's class of 1993, worked as a real-estate broker. He was an avid outdoorsman, and an enthusiastic world traveler, having visited South America and other locations. Formerly a resident of Boulder, Colorado, he was vacationing with a friend, Elizabeth North, at Princess Resort on the island of Phi Phi, Thailand, when he was swept away by a tsunami that hit the day after Christmas, Dec. 26, 2004, and took the lives of more than 200,000 others. His friend survived, but Ben was listed as missing. On March 7, 2005, his remains were finally identified using dental records. Left to cherish his memory are his parents; a brother, David (Heather) Abels, of Evanston, Illinois; his faithful dog, Grommett; a nephew, Emmet Abels; and many other relatives and friends. A private memorial service for the family was held. In his honor, Ben's family started the Ben Abels Tsunami Relief Fund to help those who survived the tsunami, and other disasters.
