The year of birth at the top of the memorial is an ESTIMATE based on Pleasant's being listed as age 14 in the 1850 census, but that is INCONSISTENT with the 1839 year of birth on the tombstone.

Musician, 48th Regt Ohio Volunteer Infantry (1861-1862); with prior service (1861) in 22nd Regt Ohio Vol Inf.

Pleasant Ladd's age, as reported in various Federal Censuses:

1850: 14 (in Fairfield Twp, Highland Co, OH, in household headed by Jordan Davis)

1860: ?

1870: [Could he be "Thomas P. Ladd, 33, born Ohio, a miner, listed in City of Hamilton, White Pine Co, Nevada?]

1880: 40 (farmer in Laramar, Colorado, with wife, Victoria)

1890: Back in Fairfield Twp, Highland Co, OH; listed in census of surviving war veterans -- the only part of the 1890 census that survived the disastrous fire -- but it doesn't list an age; it does, however, record injury to his eyes and ears, so his pension file might list a date of birth.

1900: ?

1910: 70 (in Fairfield Twp, Highland Co, OH)

1920: 82 (as "P. F. Ladd" in Highland Co, OH)

UNRESOLVED ISSUE RE PARENTS: Pleasant has been said to be the son of Gerrard/Jared Ladd and Beulah/Bulah M. Chalfont Ladd. The same Internet posting said Pleasant was born abt 1834 [note discrepancy with tombstone]. Beulah/Bulah died in 1835 and is buried in Fairfield Quaker Cemetery, and Hinshaw's records from Fairfield Monthly Meeting list four children born to Gerrard and Bulah from 1828 to 1835 with no Pleasant among them. (Gerrard was dismissed in 1830 for disunity, so he's not in the records individually after that date). The only record of Pleasant at Fairfield Monthly Meeting is that he was received on request in 1880 following his return from Colorado. Pleasant is said to have had a half brother, Benjamin W. Ladd, born abt 1841 in Fairfield, Highland Co, OH, son of Gerrard Ladd and Martha J. Hethcock (second wife of Gerrard/Gerard). Benjamin, like Pleasant, served in the 48th OVI. Can anyone cast a light on this mystery?

Despite the fact that there were death certificates in Ohio in 1924, there seems to be none for Pleasant Ladd, although there is a 1924 burial record (no image available).

========================

Apparently Elsie Johnson Ayres, author of HIGHLAND PIONEER SKETCHES & FAMILY GENEALOGIES (Hillsboro, 1971), was similarly mystified by Pleasant's parentage. On pp. 891-894, she lists many descendants of Gerrard Ladd who married Margaret Moorman; they are said to have "set out for the Quaker settlement in Highland Co." in the spring of 1808. Then, on p. 894, she says there were at least 22 heads of family in the county in 1912 who were named Ladd and who were property owners (no source cited), and, with no transition, says, "Pleasant Ladd, 1839-1924, and his wife, the former Victoria Davis, 1857-1938, were retired and living in Leesburg. He was a veteran of the 48th Reg., O.V.I. during the Civil War." It sounds as though Mrs. Ayres was relying on the tombstone and had no clue who Pleasant's parents were but hoped to get away with implying a connection between the descendants of the Ladd-Moorman marriage and Pleasant Ladd without disclosing to readers that she had no specific evidence from which to conclude that. Disappointing.
