John Francis Keegan entered the Marine Corps 19 February, 1943 from Marcus, Iowa. Qualified as a Rifle Sharpshooter and completed recruit training in the 2nd Recruit Training Battalion, MCB San Diego, CA. 14 April, 1943 assigned to D Company, Infantry Battalion, MCB Camp Elliott, CA. During August, 1943 assigned as a Machine Gunner (MOS 604) in H Company, 2nd Battalion, 23rd Marines, 4th Marine Division, MCB Camp Pendleton, CA. 29-31 October, 1943 on furlough.

13 January, 1944 embarked USS Sheridan (APA-51) at San Diego for movement overseas. 21 January, 1944 at Lahaina Roads, Maui. 1-4 February, 1944 participated in combat operations on Namur, Marshall Islands. 22 February, 1944 arrived at Kahului, Maui and based at Camp Maui near Haiku. During March, 1944 promoted to Private First Class and assigned to G Company, 2nd Battalion, 23rd Marines.

17-19 April, 1944 embarked USS Sheridan (APA-51) for landing rehearsals in Hawaiian Islands. 13 May, 1944 departed Maui. 29 May, 1944 departed Pearl Harbor. 8-11 June, 1944 at Eniwetok, Marshalls.

15 June, 1944 landed on Blue Beach Two Saipan D-Day and participated in combat operation until 9 July, 1944. 23 July, 1944 embarked on an LST at Saipan. 24 July 1944 landed on White Beach One Tinian D-Day and particiapted in Combat Operations until 10 August, 1944. 14 August, 1944 departed Marianas. 24 August, 1944 arrived at Maui. Promoted to Corporal.

10 January, 1945 embarked an LST. 12-17 January, 1945 landing rehearsals at Maalaea Bay, Maui. 18-22 January, 1945 at West Loch, Pearl Harbor. 10-15 February, 1945 in the Marianas. 19 January, 1945 landed on Yellow Beach Two Iwo Jima D-Day and participated in combat operations until Killed in Action 11 March, 1945.

Next of Kin: Mother, Mrs Kathryn Smorawske, General Delivery, Marcus, Iowa. Father Christopher Keegan died in 1930.

Originally buried in the 4th Marine Division Cemetery on Iwo Jima.

1948 returned to US for permanent burial in Fairback, Iowa.
