Death: Dec. 19, 2000

Musician. Born in Jamestown, New York, he began playing at the age of 6 and became a professional lead guitarist by age 16. In 1981, he formed the band "10,000 Maniacs" with musicians John Lombardo, Dennis Drew, Steven Gustafson and singer Natalie Merchant. The band became a national success and won a Grammy Award for best contemporary folk album, "Blind Man's Zoo" (1989).
