Virginia planter; son of Lewis Burwell and Lucy Higginson Burwell. First buried at Fairfield in Gloucester County, he was later reburied at Abingdon Church.

Lewis Burwell II and his first wife, Abigail Smith had a son, Lewis Burwell III who died at age 15. After his wife died, Lewis II married the widow Martha Yeo (Lear) Cole in 1694 at Fairfield Plantation. They ALSO had a son named Lewis Burwell III.

It was not unusual for two sons to have the same name. The name Lewis was a family name that was perpetuated in the family. When the first son named Lewis died young, Lewis II merely named another son (by his second wife) "Lewis". There are quite a few examples of this kind of thing (recycling of names) in other VA families, though it happened far more often among the gentry class than the lower classes.
