Death: Jun. 26, 1774
Philadelphia County
Pennsylvania, USA

A wealthy merchant of Philadelphia and close friend of James Horatio Watmough. One of the signers of the famous Non-Importation Act of 1763. His portrait (shown) by Benjamin West

"He was a merchant, and a member of Christ Church. His store and residence were on the east side of Water Street, third door above Market Street, the lot extending eastward into the Delaware River. From different advertisements in the "Pennsylvania Gazette" it appears that he was an importer of dry goods, cutlery, etc. and long lists of his stock are given, sometimes including pewter and brass articles. He was a member of the Common Council of Philadelphia. The last meeting at which his name is given as being present, was that of October 5, 1773. He died June 26, 1774, aged 55 years, and lies buried in Christ Church burying ground."
