Free Will Baptist Leader

Damon was born into the family of God in July, 1932 in Flat River, Missouri, and was ordained into the Gospel Ministry in 1936 St. Francois County Quarterly meeting, Missouri. Damon married Sylvia R. Wood in 1938, and God gave them two lovely girls and fifty-eight years of companionship and service together. Sylvia's roots came from Joshua Wood who was one of three Wood families that came to St. Francois County Missouri from Ohio near 1866. They started most of the Free Will Baptist churches in the area which started the Quarterly meeting of the same name. Damon attended Flat River Jr. College, but when the Free Will Baptist Bible College began in 1942, he and his wife, Sylvia, joined seven other students. Two years later they made up half of the first graduating class. Brother Dodd went on with his formal education until he received a Doctor of Ministries degree in the 1980s. Study was a joy and writing was a passion for him. He wrote as he spoke, with enthusiasm. He published, All of Mine For Him, 1954; The Free Will Baptist Story, 1956; Go Home & Tell Thy Friends, 1957; Trailways to Adventure, 1963; Study Guide for Revelation, 1967; Handbook for New Church Members, 1970; Marching Through Georgia, 1977. Damon and Sylvia were foreign missionaries to Cuba, 1945-48. He served as the fourth National Association Executive Secretary, 1949-53. In 1953 he was the first full-time Promotional Secretary for the National Home Missions Department and opened its first national office. Damon was a Foreign Missions Board Member, 1944-46, and a Free Will Baptist Bible College Trustee Board Member, 1962-76. In Georgia, Brother Dodd served in many capacities: State Moderator; Chairman of the Historical Commission; Chairman of the Committee that wrote the Standard and Doctrinal Examination for Licensing and Ordaining Free Will Baptist Ministers in Georgia, which was adopted by the state association, November 16, 1979. He served as an evangelist, church planter and pastor. He served churches in Missouri, 1937-42, 1947-50; Tennessee, 1942-46; and in Georgia. His first Georgia pastorate was in Savannah, 1958-62, South Georgia Association. Later he served the congregations at Homerville, 1965-73, Little River Association; Bay, 1974-75, Union Association; New Home, Miller County, 1975-81 and 90, Martin Association; Bellview, 1983 and 1987, Midway Association.
